My journey

Before becoming a counsellor, I worked in the legal profession with clients who were experiencing relationship breakdown.  This gave me an understanding of the difficult experiences many people suffer, brought about by separation and divorce. Trauma, loneliness, grief, parenting conflicts, loss of identity to name just a few. The desire to support people emotionally through these issues was a key motivation in leaving the legal provision to train as a counsellor.

I have also been a foster parent.  Fostering gave me an insight into the many  inequalities faced by young people in care, and also some of the challenges in meeting their needs as a therapeutic carer .

My life experiences led me to be increasingly passionate about mental health, until I became certain that I wanted to train as a counsellor. I went back to University to study for an MSc in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy. My research subject for my MSc in Integrative Counselling looked into the gap in support for young people as they leave care.

I qualified with an MSc (Distinction) in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy, University of Derby
